Getting Started

Sorry for the delay – it’s exam season, so I’ve been busy.

Right, after all that musing you’re wondering how to actually get started learning Spanish. What course to use? How much should you pay? Should you join a class?

There are LOADS of courses available – a bewildering array, in fact. Books, tapes, CDs CD-ROMS and online. There are so many; which one is best?

Well, I’ll tell you!

Start here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/spanish/lj/
and then: http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/spanish/talk/

Why? Simple - it’s free. And multimedia. And broken into small managable chunks. And it's encouraging and motivating. The BBC know what they’re doing, all right! But mostly because it’s free, though you can buy a range of "Talk Spanish" support materials, of course. Good old Beeb - worth the licence fee even if you don't watch the telly!

The next best are the free books and CDs which have been given away recently by UK newspapers. If you missed them, ask your friends – someone probably still has them lying about!

Are you spotting the common theme? Don’t invest too much money at the start. Different people learn in different ways, and the best course for you may not be the best for everyone. Investing a lot of hard-earned cash in something which doesn’t suit you would be rather discouraging!

Browse Second-hand Bookshops for a dictionary and old teach yourself books. Older books will follow a very grammar-baseed method, but if you belong to the generation that did that in school, you may find that very useful and reassuring… or not! If you don’t like their teaching style, you will probably find them a useful reference in the future.

Use the public library to order up and try out the more expensive courses for free before you part with any money.

Don’t just stick to one course – use several. Yes, at the same time, why not? And don’t feel you have to plod through every exercise, one chapter at a time; skip about if you feel like it. As I get time I'll have a look at specific products and let you know what I think is good or bad about them.

Whenever you feel stuck with your article writing and are facing the typical writer's block, you should go with the 'brain dumping' method where you write as fast as possible without thinking twice. Essentially, you just have to write as fast as possible, breaking through that inner wall that keeps you from transcribing what you need to. You don't really have to care about the spellings, grammar or even if the content you're creating is making sense. You will be utterly astounded by all of the content that you come up with what you have put all of your article content into written format. Later on, you can use re-structure and proof read this article to make it presentable.

We suppose that not everyone can learn to be a speed article writer, but you have to be willing to learn it and practice your writing.
