The OU is brilliant, but expensive. What's really great, though - if I understand the system right - is that now, when they are now publishing a selection of courses online FOR FREE!
Now, it's pretty serious stuff and perhaps not to everyone's taste. There's also no tutor support, but (and I do think this is quite clever) you are encouraged to register and keep a learning journal so that you can keep in touch with other people who are using the same materials and form a sort of self-supporting group. Nice.
Courses in Spanish seem to be available at 3 levels: Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced.
Plenty here for someone to chew on, especially once they've progressed beyond the most basic level. Get stuck in!

Yes, that price is pretty steep, at least the price I saw on the OU web site.
Instituto Cervantes in the U.K. has an online course which includes an online tutor and the price is ₤125 for 15 weeks.

Yeah. I have actually been doing a Latin course with the OU and, while not cheap, I have been very satisfied and would therefore say that it was still good value for money even though it was expensive, if I know what you mean. I think the fact that they are offering free access to some of their materials is a very commendable act of public service. Good for them.
I wasn't aware of the Instituto Cervantes course, though I do know that they also have some very good free resources for Spanish learners (that'll be another post later, I imagine!). Must check it out! Thanks!
Great info about the Open University. Let's just hope they are not wearing the same tweed jacket as on late night TV in the UK in the 70's
